PetroChina, China's largest listed oil and gas producer, says it would “welcome” closer co- operation with BP as the embattled UK group struggles to cover liabilities arising from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster.

　　Chinese energy companies have spent billions of dollars on overseas acquisitions this year, with headline deals including CNOOC's $3bn investment in Bridas and Sinopec's $4.65bn investment for a stake in a Canadian oil sands project.

　　今年，中国各能源企业已斥资数十亿美元进行海外收购，其中最重要的交易包括中海油(CNOOC)以30亿美元投资阿根廷Bridas，以及中石化(Sinopec)以46.5亿美元购入加拿大一个油砂项目的部分股权。

　　“Our first reaction [to the Deepwater Horizon spill] was how to help BP to quickly fix the problem,” Mao Zefeng, head of investor relations, told the Financial Times. “We contacted them to see if there is anything we can help with in terms of engineering or technical help.”

　　Mr Mao declined to discuss the prospect of financial assistance. “We have no comment on market rumours,” he said. “But if there was some opportunity to work more closely together, we would welcome that.”

　　PetroChina is seen as unlikely to make a full bid for BP, mostly because of political obstacles, but could join the British group in joint ventures or purchase assets from BP.

　　CNOOC, China's largest offshore exploration firm, is seen as a logical bidder for BP's 60 per cent stake in Pan American Energy, Argentina's second- largest oil producer. The deal would bring BP about $9bn.

　　BP欲出售阿根廷第二大石油生产商Pan American Energy 60%的股份，而中国最大的海上勘探公司中海油被视为合乎逻辑的竞购者。该交易将为BP带来约90亿美元。

　　CNOOC already holds a 20 per cent interest in Pan American because of its acquisition in March of a 50 per cent stake in Bridas. CNOOC and BP declined to comment.

　　Mr Mao said PetroChina had co-operated “very closely” with BP in the past. BP was a cornerstone investor when PetroChina went public in 2000, buying 20 per cent of the listed shares. BP sold those shares in 2004. The two companies have a joint venture to operate gas stations in Guangdong province.
